Beware of Hotspot WiFi privacy and security

Simple Scan shows all WiFi devices at this location.

As is common for many Canadians, I frequent Tim Horton’s for coffee and meetings. Recently, they’ve started offering free WiFi at many of their locations which is obviously very attractive for business as well as travelers, especially tourists who want to avoid roaming charges on their smartphones.
However, as you can tell by these screenshots, all it takes is for someone to launch a simple tool that essentially says “Who is here?” over the wireless network and everyone’s device reports back.

Starbucks offers free Wi-Fi in Canada

Let the battle for the best seat begin. Canadian coffee addicts just got one more reason to camp out for unreasonably long periods of time at their local Starbucks: free Wi-Fi.

Starting on Canada Day, more than 750 Starbucks locations across the country will offer free Wi-Fi, the company said Wednesday. More than 100 of those locations are in Toronto.

Services will be provided by Bell Canada. In the past, purchasing a drink or food item earned customers two hours of access. The new system does not require a password or user name and will be unlimited.

In mid-June Starbucks announced free Wi-Fi would be coming to the U.S. and hinted the offer would be extended to Canada.

Following the first announcement, Kenneth Hardy, professor emeritus of marketing with the Richard Ivey School of Business, said Starbucks has the problem of dealing with the evolution of their customer base, from the espresso-sipping, leisurely, chatty customer to those who want a grab-and-go experience.

unable to get internet connectivity using Tim Horton's WiFi

I've been unable to get internet connectivity using Tim Horton's WiFi on my MacBook Pro.
I can select the Tim Horton network but when I launch my browser nothing happens.

I've cleared cache and cookies, restarted laptop and a few other things, Not able to get on the Internet no matter what I do., My iPhone -was- able to connect without issue. This is odd isn't it?

I've tried Safari and Chrome to no avail, I am being given an IP address but get  no further than that, The Tim Horton's join network page never shows up. Nothing.

This has happened to me at 3 different Tim Horton's.

I use my laptop at -countless- hot spots and have -never- had a connection issue... only at Tim Hortons.

Free Wireless Internet Coming to Tim Hortons

More than 2,000 restaurants will provide largest free Internet network in Canada

The Internet will be more convenient than ever for Canadians on-the-go as free wireless network access becomes available at your neighborhood Tim Hortons restaurant.

Tim Hortons has begun rolling out high-speed Wi-Fi and expects more than 90 per cent of its restaurants in Canada will have wireless access by September -- just in time for the new school year.

"It's all about convenience and making life easier for our guests," said Roland Walton, Chief Operations Officer, Tim Hortons. "Free wireless Internet at Tim Hortons will help people stay connected on the road in more locations than anyone in Canada and is yet another great reason to visit one of our restaurants to enjoy a fresh cup of coffee."
